I am using your DMAE eye cream, and wanted to know how long I can keep the tube before it goes bad. I ordered 2 at once and haven`t used one of them and have had them since the beginning of summer. • The following site (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/451353) includes a question that best describes my case as I understood it, six years ago, from my doctor. I understand that I have two major veins (out of three) that have had gotten two damaged valves. Now I am 56 years old. Before the above damage, I used to have a very strong potency. After the above damage, about six to eight years ago, I started to have difficulty in order to have some short intercourse. But this is becoming more difficult by passage of time. So far, I did not lose erection totally. The erection is there but for shorter times not sufficient for complete intercourse, especially that I am not having cooperation from my partner. I was wondering if there are recent methods for repairing the damaged valves such as replacement of damaged veins (replacing the two major veins at the parts of the damaged valves) or injection of stem cells to repair the damaged valves? Or, are there some known undergoing researches that likely would help in the above lines or in other successful methods, in the near future? Also, how and where can I follow up future progress in this connection?

Answer:  Unfortunately I do not have the answer to your dilema. I suggest you speak with a urologist about the physical issue. You may also benefit from testosterone replacement if your levels are low. JJP 8/23/08

The Typical dose in the U.S. is 3 mg per day. In Europe the typical dose is 9 mg per day. Each is divided into 3 doses per day. There have not been any major side effects reported with either dose. You may want to include Piracetam with Hydergine as they work well together. JJP 5/21/08

  • Can I begin using Mederma scar cream right after I have my sutures removed from a tummy tuck?

Answer:  wait a couple of days after the sutures are out and then it is OK to start. JG 5.20.08

  • Dr. Can you tell me if there is one procedure that will take care of fine lines, brown spots and veins on the nose or if I have to do different procedures for these. I`m looking for something I can do that has the least down time since I have to work. Thank you.

Answer:  it will take two different types of lasers, sorry. JG 7.27.08

  • Which product do you prefer...Mederma or Scarguard? thanks.

    Answer:  Scarguard. JG 5.19.08

  • I have been using the obagi treatment for about 7 years for acne scars and large pores. I am planning on getting pregnant and have heard that I should not use retina-A during the pregnancy. Can you recommend any other products that have the similar results that I can use during that time. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Answer:  All similar products are Vitamin A derivatives so in theory they can all cause it. Usually acne gets better during pregnancy due to the progesterone so you might not need as much help as you think. JG 5.16.08

  • Is it normal after a full tummy tuck to feel weird movements in the abdonomen when taking a deep breath or yawning? And this subside as the tightness goes away? thanks.

Answer:  at the begining it is normal and all gets better with time. JG 5.16.08

  • What do you think of the Quicklift face lift - is it as good as a mini lift?

Answer:  quick way to spend money and be disappointed. JG 5.7.08

  • three years ago at age 51, I had a tummy tuck after a 120 pound weight loss. The muscles in my tummy are still very tight and people are telling me that I walk stooped over. I have noticed it too. I have to constantly remind myself to straighten up. When I straighten up it pulls in my tummy. How can I loosen the muscles so I can walk straight again?

Answer:  Stretching the muscles, if that is the true cause, will help. That along with strengthening the core muscles. 5/04/08

  • Dr. Pierce, can you please tell me how much vitamin D I really need. I am a 53 year old female (small boned). Thank you.

Answer:  Most people require 1,000-5,000 iu. It really depends on your blood levels. JJP 4/30/08

  • I have never seen this before, and am not sure if you can help me, but I sure hope so. The past 3 days, I have noticed a purple bruised looking line on my eyelid (where your eyeliner would go). At first I thought it was where I didn`t get the makeup off, but that`s not what it is. Do you have any idea about this? I do suffer from migraines. Thank you.

Answer:  could be a dilated vein that arose from a migraine, typically if it is that they go away in a few days to weeks. JG 4.25.08

  • Doctor, as I am aging (52) my skin color seems to be getting lighter. Is there any way to bring back the melanin? Thank you.

Answer:  just sun exposure. JG 4.23.08

  • Doctor, as I am aging (52) my skin color seems to be getting lighter. Is there any way to bring back the melanin? Thank you.

Answer:  not much besides sun exposue, but that will accelerate the skin aging.JG 4.21.08

  • Dr. Garcia, if I have fillers in my face, am I a candidate for Rhytec? Thank you.

Answer:  should not interfere with the fillers or the Rhytec. JG 4.18.08

  • Dr. Garcia, can you tell me how long the results last with Rytec and the downtime (how bad your skin looks and for how long). Thank you.

Answer:  it depends greatly on the type of treatment taht is done, your age and the quality of your skin. In the best circumstances it might last 2-3 years or so. The skin will look bad between 4-12 days, depending on how deep they go. JG 4.18.08

  • hello doctor forgot to ask a question. i was born with full lips but with age they are starting to show a lot of lines. can Thermage help to plump them up a bit? thank you

Answer:  Thermage will not do that. JG 4.17.08

  • Hello Dr. Pierce, How long does it usually take for one to get used to custom shoe orthotics?

Answer:  It all depends on how aggressive one is in the beginning. I think about 3 months should be sufficient. I recommend asking a podiatrist for more information. JJP 4/15/08

  • Doctor, I had V beam treatment on my legs and arms for brown spots 6 weeks ago. I was told that I can wait until the end of summer to do more treatments. It doesn`t appear anything is getting any lighter. Do you think these will lighten up some more from the first treatment? Also, can I wait that long before other treatments or did I just waste my money. Thank you.

Answer:  it will likely need a series and there will probably be no further lightening until the series of treatments restarts. JG 4.14.08

  • Also, I forgot to add...I notice when he has hot flashes too. He just feels too warm when he cuddles up next to me at night. What to do? It`s so frustrating. Thanks again.

    Answer:

  • Hi, doctor~ I need some help...My hubby started taking requip for what we think is RLS. His legs were jumping every few minutes at night- mostly it was me who was disturbed by this and occasionally it would keep him up. He got up to 1.5 mg a day and started experiencing bad hot flashes. He told his doctor and his doctor didn`t seem to think it was related to the medicine. My hubby is 36. Once he accidently took 2 mg.- he forgot he took his medicine and he really had horrible hot flashes. He recently cut his own dose down to 1 mg. again and the hot flashes stopped but now he`s twitching again. And it`s driving me crazy! I take Lunesta to keep him from keeping me awake. Are there other medications he can try that may not cause the hot flashes? We`ve been married 13 years and he didn`t have this issue then. Or are there some natural remedies? Have you heard of hot flashes being a side effect? Thanks for any help. I appreciate and understand his desire not to take too much medicine and not wanting to have hot flashes but I want to sleep too. Thanks for any help.

Answer:  Sorry, I do not have a better option. JJP 4/14/08

Answer:  Get back on the treadmill!!! Do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You can drink water or a cup of black coffee or tea. No sugar. Stop drinking soda if you do. Eat 5-6 meals a day with protein and vegetables at each meal. You may have some carbohydrates in the first 2 or 3 meals of the day after that, NONE. Carbohydrates should be complex. • Dr. Garcia, thank you for answering my nose contouring question. Do you think it will smooth out when all the gel is gone? Thank you so much.

Answer:  most likley, yes, I do. JG 4.10.08

  • Does a tummy tuck interfere w/your normal appetite after surgery? By making you feel full sooner? Or is it just a short term affect of the muscles feeling tight? thanks.

Answer:  no, it does not on a long temr basis. It might make you feel full sooner until your tissues heal though. JG 4.10.08

  • Dr. Garcia, I had nose contouring with Radiesse 3 weeks ago. It looked great but has started to look a little bumpy. Is that because the gel is going away? Do you think it will smooth out more after all the gel carrier goes away? If so, can you tell me how long this should take? Thank you.

Answer:  it is likely because the gel is going away and your body needs to build up the collagen around the longer lasting material still in place. It might take naother few weeks to start to get better though. JG 4.9.08

  • Dr. Garcia, I had nose contouring 2 weeks ago. The doctor gave me a shot in my upper gums to numb the nose. My teeth still feel strange (like kind of numb). Will this go away? Also, what do you prefer for this kind of procedure..Jevederm or Radiesse. Thank you.

Answer:  very unusual for it to last that long, they might have hit a nerve directly to cause that and resolution might take a long time. I have used both materials for that purpose, I think Radiesse lasts longer though. JG 4.4.08

  • Can you get a good benefit for your skin by taking Glucosomine orally? thank you.

Answer:  I have read some reports of this, but have failed to see it. JJP 4/3/08

  • Are there any good OTC supplements for curcumin? thanks.

Answer:  Try Life Extensions products. They have a high quality. JJP 4/02/08

  • Is Turmeric a good anti-inflammatory and is it good to take orally for swelling? What else is it good for? thanks.

Answer:  Tumeric is the source of curcumin. A wealth of data shows that curcumin and its related chemicals (collectively known as curcuminoids) help to prevent and fight a wide range of diseases—from cancer to cardiovascular disease—through a variety of mechanisms. These include powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, chemopreventive (cancer-preventive), and antineoplastic (cancer-fighting) properties. JJP 4/02/08

  • Does L-carnitine when taken orally help with cellulite? thanks.

Answer:  There has been nothing, to date, that consistently works in decreasing cellulite. JJP 4/01/08

  • Dr. Garcia, is it ok to get botox in the same area as Radiesse? I had nose contouring and want the botox to horizontal lines on the bridge. Thank you.

Answer:  There should be no issues with that. JJP 3/27/08

  • Why does it sometimes seem that when you look at pics of women that have had lipo on the abdomen, flanks and upper back that their arms look smaller after even though they have had no lipo on their arms?

Answer:  many times they go on a diet or exercise more often after the liposuction as they are more motivated and other things can change because of that. JG 3.20.08

  • Dr., 3 days ago I had the V beam to get rid of brown spots on my legs and arms. I was told the spots would get black and fall off. They are just a little darker, but not at all black, and my hands look the same as they did before the treatment. Do you think that maybe it`s not going to work? Thank you.

Answer:  it likely needs a series of treatments in general. JG 3.16.08

  • How can you tell if you have loose skin versus extra fat= on say the inner thigh area? Thanks.

Answer:  if you pinch it and it is thick it is fat and if it is thin it is likely skin. JG 3.16.08

  • DR. PRICE, I HAD SUBCISION APPROX 4 WEEKS AGO ON AN UPPER LIP LINE AND AM LEFT WITH A FIRM BUMP UNDER THE TREATMENT SITE. WILL THIS GO AWAY EVENTUALLY? IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP DISOLVE IT? I HAVE BEEN MASSAGING IT FREQUENTLY.

Answer:  yes, most likely only old blood and with massage and heat and a little time it will get better. JG 3.16.08

  • Hi, Doctor, I have to go in and have a jaw plate removed that was put in 1 year and 1/2 ago due to inflamation- I had corrective surgery for an overbite and my jaw broke in 2 places on that side instead of 1. And I guess due to the extra trauma on that side- I`m having it removed(which it`s not really needed now anyway because my bone has healed)- so, that said....I wanted to have a Full Tummy tuck done- How long should I wait between having the plate removed and the tummy tuck? The jaw surgeon said it would be an out-patient procedure and it of course won`t be as invasive as the original procedure. Thanks.

Answer:  I think a few days is enough, best of luck. JG 3.16.08

  • I am going to have a FTT done- How long should I anticipate not being able to walk completely upright? thanks!

    Answer:  2-4 weeks. JG 3.16.08

  • Hi,im thinking about getting my nipples pierced but keep putting it off because of a horrific abcess that i got in my armpit some time ago that took ages to go with 2 lots of antibiotics. is there a huge risk of this happening again and is there any link to breast cancer with this piercing? Im 42 does this also have any bearing on the above mentioned?Thank you

Answer:  First off, any time that you open the skin there is risk of infection. This can be reduced by going to a clean, reputable parlor and having the procedure done there. Afterwards following the post care instructions and seeing you doctor if you have any signs of infection. These piercings do take some time to heal, up to 6 months. As far as I know there are no risk factors for developing breast cancer from piercing. JJP 3/12/08

  • Dr. Garcia, I had ear cartlidge put in my nose 2 years ago. I am to have nose contouring with Radiesse next week. Can you tell me if this will be a problem. Thank you so much.

Answer:  do not think there should be a problem. JG 3.10.08

  • If I am 36 and have good skin if i get a little chin lipo does that make me more likely to show thin skin or muscle appearance on my neck- like that banded look? thanks.

Answer:  it could, possibly. JG 3.10.08

  • If I have a Ftt and lipo of that area- Would it enable me when I exercise to maybe have an easier time when targeting the thighs because I have lessened the fat in my abdonomen? I am not majorly overweight. I seem to have excess fat in my stomach and thighs.

Answer:  As we have said many times in the past on this site. There is no such thing as spot reduction naturally. If you have a surgical procedure to reduce fat in one area, that area will have less percentage of fat. The body will reduce fat evenly throughout the body. So the areas with a higher percentage of fat will lose more total fat. JJP 3/09/08

  • If I am considering FTT and lipo on bra strap area and lipo on inner thighs and a tiny bit under chin- Would it be better to combine the tummy and back and possibly chin and do the thighs later? Pros and Cons?

Answer:  I think it is reasonable to do it all together to minimize anesthesia events. JG 3.10.08

  • I`m sorry I meant to ask is the Tumenescent technique better for the chin area?

Answer:  almost all liposuction is done with tumescent fluid, but not all done under tumescent anesthesia. JG 3.6.08

  • What is your opinion of Injection Lipolyisis and how does it differ from Mesotherapy?

Answer:  They are the same. JJP 3/6/08

  • Is the tumescent technique better the tissues in the chin area?

Answer:  all liposuction now is done with tumescent fluid, but sometimes they use local anesthesia in the tumescent fluid and sometimes not, JG 3.6.08

  • And is this usually only an issue w/the chin or face area?

Answer:  can happen anywhere liposuction is done, some areas like the inner thighs are more prone to it though. JG 3.6.08

  • Does liposuction in the chin area somehow damage the skin so that it doesn`t have the support system it once had and that`s what causes the premature sagging later or is it only because of the fat that was once there and stretched the skin? Also, why is it that just weight loss would make it less likely to sag?

Answer:  anytime liposuction is done, some of the suspensary structures from the skin to the underlying tissue are severed and do not reform, so the amount of suspension after a liposuction is less than with weight loss alone, so skin will always shrink better with weight losss than with a surgical procedure, no matter how minimally invasive. JG 3.6.08

  • What is your opinion of mesotherapy?

Answer:  waste of money. JG 3.6.08

  • F l e x E f f e c t® facial resistance training-Can something like this actually work?

    Answer:  nope. JG 3.6.08

  • Also,as to the question below I`m in my mid 30`s. Also, does the liposuction create a tightening of the skin that so many website proclaim? thanks so much!

Answer:  liposuction does not cause skin to tighten, removing the fat allows the skin to shrink if it is in good shape since the fat is gone but the process of liposuction itself does not tighten skin that was loose. JG 3.5.08

  • Is the inner thigh area when liposuctioned at great risk for leaving behind sagging skin? thanks.

Answer:  it is one of the higher risk areas, yes. JG 3.5.08

  • So, if I were to exercise and lost the chin pudge- would I still have the same result with the possibilty of premature aging in that area because the fat was still decreased?

Answer:  no, the skin would be tighter if you lost the weight with diet and exercise. JG 3.4.08

  • For me, I am 36 and I have a fat pad just under my chin. I think that because I have a small chin I notice it more-not so much when I have my head up as when I have it pointing downward. I don`t have a thick neck. Thanks for your reply.

Answer:  could do liposuction, hard to say without seeing you in person. JG 3.4.08

  • So, asthetically speaking- is the chin one of your least favorite places to do lipo? I`m just trying to decide if having a little pudge is the lesser of the two. Thanks so much for all your responses.

Answer:  no, I enjoy doing it, it is just a matter of telling people about the risks and then letting them decide. If someone has had a very full neck for years and years and is a little older, they will look better for sure, but in time as that skin had been prematurely stretched by the fat, it will sag sooner than not. Ideally it would be a very young person and very little fat, but that is not a usual patient for neck liposuction. Usually the people that want it are older and have very thick necks, and in those, at times what is needed is a neck or facelift to remove the fat and redrape the skin.JG 3.4.08

  • I have a bulging vein on the left side of my forehead. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of it?

Answer:  not really because removing it could cause swelling on a permanent basis. JG 3.4.08

  • on the question below...if you have it done in your 30`s is there still a chance that it will accelerate aging in the neck area when you get older?

Answer:  less, but it still depends on the amount taken out and how long it was heavy for. JG 3.4.08

  • Will liposuction on the chin cause the skin there to age faster as you get older because of the lack of fat? thanks.

Answer:  potentially yes, especially in older patietns with a lot of fat removed. JG 3.3.08

  • Dr. Garcia, can you please tell me what can get rid of spider veins on the nose. Thank you.

Answer:  YAG laser, IPL, hyfercator, but they are all temporary. JG 3.3.08

  • Are Suzanne Costa`s products for fat loss or stretch marks any good?

Answer:  do not think so. JG 3.3.08

  • Dr. Garcia. Thank you for your answer on the nose contouring. Can you tell me if the gel will cause it to look bumpy for the 8 weeks until is disappears. Thank you.

Answer:  it should not look lumpy. JG 3.3.08

  • How much of a concern is it when having chin lipo that the muscles on the neck will become too prominant OR that when you get older you have too much fat loss in that area? thanks.

Answer:  the older one is the greater the chance. JG 3.3.08

  • Dr. Garcia, I am going to have nose contouring with Radiesse in 2 days. I`m concerned that when it starts to wear off that my nose might look bumpy if it wears off differently in different places. Can you give me your opinion. Thank you so much.

Answer:  the dissolution of the Radiesse, if it is not lumpy after the gel carrier dissolves in 8 weeks, should not leave you looking lumpy.

  • Dr. Garcia, I have been using your DMAE eye cream for over a year and love it. However, I received an e-mail from Paula Begeoun (who writes books on cosmetics and skin treatments) that it may be harmful. She writes: A recent study published in the May 2007 issue of The British Journal of Dermatology has shown contrary evidence that it may actually pose risks for the skin. In vitro tests of the pure substance, as well as creams that contained DMAE, demonstrated a fairly fast and significant increase in protective elements around the skin cell. However, a short time later the researchers observed an important reduction in cell growth and, in some cases, they found it halted cell growth altogether. So while you may initially experience a kind of swelling of the skin because of the expanding effect caused by topical application of DMAE, the long-term results appear to be far from desirable. This has kind of scared me about using it. Can you tell me what you think. I trust your judgement. Thank you.

Answer:  I have read the study and firstly, many times in vitro studies do not apply to real life, also, it is dependent on the dose used. After saying that, understand that there have been literally millions of applications of DMAE both orally and in skin care products and there have been no reported issues or concerns. Certainly if you are concerned, you can stop, but upon further research you will find similar articles to that one regarding all of the commonly used skin care products, including Retin-A and Vitamin C. JG 2.28.08

  • No question. Just wanted to thank you for all you do for so many. You guys are the best! Makes me wish I lived in Vegas.

Answer:  Thank you so much for your support. JJP 2/26/08

  • Dr. Garcia, I will have nose contouring with Radiesse next week. Does the doctor need to overfill like restylane? If so, how long before it looks the way it will look? Thank you.

Answer:  I would not overfill and the swelling should be gone within one week at most. JG 2.25.08

  • Hello. I have a question about lipodissolve. Do these injections really work on getting rid of love handles and moderate tummy fat? May it be used in the chin area (double chin) as well? Thank you.

Answer:  it does not work. JG 2.25.08

  • On the chin lipo what is the chance that-that will happen? I`m 36 and have good skin in that area- I mean like % wise? Mine I only notice for the mose part when I tilt my chin downward. And I seem to have noticed that I had fat in that area at all in the last 2 years. thanks!

Answer:  the more fat is removed and the longer you have had it, the greater the chance. JG 2.24.08

  • What gets rid of brown spots on african american skin? I`ve tried hydroquinone and retin A, even a few chemical peels and microdermabrasion and countless creams and nothing seems to work and I don`t know of any laser treatment safe for dark skin. What REALLY works for african american skin?

Answer:  might try a YAG laser, at light settings. JG 2.24.08

  • To add to the chin question- I meant could it look worse years from now (even though it might look great now) due specifically to the lipo being done? thanks again.

Answer:  if the amount removed is small, it should be OK, if the amount is larger, then the looseness might come in the future sooner rather than later. JG 2.22.08

  • A doctor posted this on his website-Thigh liposuction safely and permanently removes thigh fat and helps correct for skin laxity, resulting in a tighter, smaller and younger looking thighs. Is this true- does it really improve skin laxity?

Answer:  if one is younger and the skin has no stretch marks the skin will contract or shrink, as to improving skin laxity overalll,no. If you had loose weak skin before, doing liposuction will not re-establish tight skin of youth, it does not improve skin elasticity. JG 2.22.08

  • I am considering having lipo on the small area under my chin (not my neck) I have a small fat pad there but it looks more pronounced because I have a small chin. I am 36 and not majorly overweight- 5ft. 3in. and 140. I am my skin looks good in that area- but I am afraid from what I have read that I could get the little fat pad removed and look great for 5 or more years and down the line have sagging because the fat was removed?? Is that a possiblity? I thought that if it retracted well and looked great that - that is what I would be left with? I don`t have rolls in my chin- when I hold my chin down is when I notice the fat pocket the most. Thanks for your help in clearing the confusion.

Answer:  it is a possiblity because the fat has been there for a while and the skin might sag earlier in the future than it would have. JG 2.22.08

  • If I have a tt and lipo - which I need after 3 kids- after the healing process will having had the lipo and tt help my body to burn the fat on other areas of my body better when I exercise since I don`t have the fatty area in my tummy? Hope this makes sense. thanks.

Answer:  There is no such thing as spot reduction with diet and exercise. The body will pull fat away from areas equally. This said, if there is more fat elsewhere, those areas will loose a greater amount as they have a higher percentage of fat to begin with. JJP 2/22/08

  • Hi, Please explain how SCULPTRA works. If I have 3 treatments in my cheeks(lots fine lines)plus 1 more treatment at 12 months for maintaince, could I then stop. If sculptra helps your own collagen to rebuild, then shouldn`t it have longterm effects OR is it really just a temporary FILLER (bandade)that will make you look better only while you keep using it. I also us RETIN-A. Thankyou.

Answer:  Sculptra actually works by restoring the collagen. Its effects can last up to 2-3 years. According to the literature, you only need maintenance to keep it up after that. JJP 2/22/08

  • Hi, I purchased a FACE ROLLER which gives tiny little pin pricks when I roll it over my face. I roll everywhere for approx 5 mins 3 times a week. I then apply RETIN-A cream. Is this really allowing the cream to work better/deeper or am I wasting my time.? Does the roller have any other extra benefits, besides cream penetration? and if so, should I use it everynight. I go a little red, but it’s always gone by morning. Thanks

Answer:  you are wasting yor time with the roller. The rendess from the cream should get better as your skin adapts to it. JG 2.22.08

  • So, even though it looks great after (on the chin lipo) it can look worse serveral years down the road As I get older? I am 36. thanks.

Answer:  I am afraid so. JG 2.21.08

  • Will lipo under the chin causing any sagging in the future of the that area- provided that it heals well and retracts well after the procedure? On a lipo site other women mentioned having lipo on their thighs and then having extra sagging in the same area years after having it done. How is this?

Answer:  potentially yes, the younger you are the lesser the chance. Although many of the dermal attachments are maintained during liposucton, not all are so there can be premature sagging. JG 2.21.08

  • Does the Celladerm Rx product you mentioned below permanenetly remove cellulite or is it temporary and what are the ingredients in the product. I looked on the website and there wasn`t a lot of info.

Answer:  As mentioned earlier, there is no known permanent way to reduce cellulite. The product contains Ginko Biloba, Fucus Vesiculosus,Melilotusand Ruscus Aculeatus just to name a few. JJP 02/21/08

  • On the 1/2 inch to an 1 inch question- What would be a better way to let the PS know that you don`t want too much taken off of your thighs- is there any way? I have seen pics and I don`t like the riding a horse look- is it just a matter of the persons build?

Answer:  I think you need to ask htem how much they feel is reasonable to expect in terms of the reduction. JG 2.21.08

  • I am a 43 year old african american male,6ft 245lbs. What are some of the best foods to eat for moderately high blood pressure? Also,I`m not sleeping alot at night, usually no more than 4-5 hours, how can I change this?

Answer:  It is not what to eat, but what not to eat. Stay away from salt. Look at the sodium content of all the foods you usually eat, you may be very surprised at how much sodium they contain. You can try melatonin to help with your sleep problems. JJP 02/21/08

  • Is it an unreasonable request when getting lipo on the thighs to ask that the doctor not take off more than a 1/2 to an inch in circumference? thanks.

Answer:  not unreasonable but it is hard to gauge that when doing it. JG 2.20.08

  • Dr. Garcia, I have had nose contouring with restylane and was pleased. My doctor wants to use Radiesse this time so it lasts longer. What do you think is best? Any bad side effects you know of? Thank you for your web site.

Answer:  should be about the same, it will last a bit longer, maybe a few months or so. In skilled hands it should be safe. JG 2.19.08

  • Dr. Garcia. I am very interested in the Celladerm Rx for cellulite. Is this something I can buy from you? I live in TN. Thank you.

Answer:  We have patients from around the country and around the world that come to us. So, yes you can get Celladerm Rx from us. The issue is as it is a prescription we would have to have some basic lab work done first and we like to see patients here in the office at least once. Great excuse for a trip to Vegas. JJP 2/19/08

Answer:  There are some temporary procedures that work, but nothing has shown long term effectivity. We offer a product Celladerm Rx that has shown good results in our patients and in clinical studies. It is an oral pill that has been shown to have up to a 94% satisfaction rate at 45 days. JJP 02/18/08

  • I would like your medical opinion on the use of the different form of laser treatment and what a realistic expectation would be from these treatments. I am contemplating a skin tightening treatment with the Candela gentle YAG laser. With all the controversy around, and people that undergo these treatments it is difficult to know what will be successful or not. Your opinion would be appreciated Thanks, Karin.

Answer:  very very mild skin tightening. JG 2.18.08

  • Hello. I am a 35 year old african american woman. I have 3 problems, my sex drive has severely decreased,(not to mention fatigue) my hair is thinning brittle, and I have brown spots on my face and body that nothing seems to get rid of. The spots come after pimples and just don`t go away. I think my problems may be because of hormones. I had a baby 4 years ago, and my hair started thinning after that. Could these problems be a hormone imbalance or am I just getting old?

Answer:  Most definitely, these problems can be due to hormone imbalance. You should have your levels checked by someone experienced in the field of age management medicine, functional endocrinology or anti-ageing medicine (All synonymous terms). JJP 2/18/08

  • How well is lipo for upper arms? I am 36. thanks.

Answer:  depends on how much fat there is and the quality of the skin. JG 2.18.08

  • I am use to having long strong nails, now they are short, weak, they hurt and they look bruised, they peel, crack and they won`t grow at all. I`ve never had to use the end of my fingers before and they are sore. Also I had removal of a kidney in July of 07 and my hair was thin to begin with now I ve lost even more. Help

Answer:  This may be caused by a few different things. If your diet and supplementation is not proper for you or possibly your thyroid is not balanced. Lab tests can help to determine if these are possible options. JJP 2/16/08

  • Is Smart Lipo a good option? thank you.

Answer:  I personally do not use it as I see absolutley no benefit from other methods out there for a longer time and their claims of better skin shrinkage have not been shown to be effective in the photos presentd at national plastic surgery meetings. JG 2.16.08

  • Is it okay to get lipo done on the bra strap areas on the back? thanks.

Answer:  it can be done, just need to be careful that the skin does not end up looser and saggy. JG 2.16.08

  • Does IPL do any good for fine lines under the eyes? thanks.

    Answer:  nope. JG 2.16.08

  • Also, I meant to say...on the fine lines under the eyes - I am 36- I wanted to know what was more effective for under the eyes- IPL, retin-A or chemical peels? thanks again!

    Answer:  Retin-A. JG 2.15.08

  • Is IPL worth the money for fine lines under the eyes or is something Retin-A better? Also, how are chemical peels on fine lines? I guess- What is your opinion on all 3 for fine lines? thanks!

Answer:  I think Retin-A is better for that. I think chemical peels do not do much for fine lines after the swelling is gone. JG 2.15.08

  • What is a good protein supplement? Also, are things that are high in protein like milk things that your body breaks down into amino acids for your body? thanks.

Answer:  Beverly International makes a good whey protein. Yes your body converts all proteins into amino acids. Otherwise they could not be assimulated into the body. JJP 2/15/08

  • What are the pro`s and con`s of using an amino acid supplement- one that contains all the amino acids? thanks.

Answer:  If it contains all the amino acids than it is a complete protein. There is no benefit to that. Just take a protein supplement and your body will break it down into amino acids. JJP 2/14/08

  • Hi doctor. I`ve been using Renova off and on for many years now for fine lines and I always exfoliate my skin. Now I`m hearing that Renova thins out your skin. I don`t want to be line free and end up with saggy skin. I`m so confused about all these products. I want to use something for fine lines, but at the same time I don`t want to end up with saggy thin skin. Is there a product that reverses thin skin. I`m tired of spending all sorts of money on these products that promises one thing but then ends up causing other problems. THANKS...

Answer:  it thins the epidermis, which is good and it thickens the dermis which is also good. JG 2.14.08

  • Dr. Garcia, do you prefer juvederm over restylane? If so, why, and if not, why not. Also, can it be used for nose contouring and does it last longer in that area than restylane. Thank you.

Answer:  I really do not have a preference, I use them both. I have used it for nose contouring but they last about the same amount of time. JG 2.14.08

  • Dr. Pierce, for the past several months, it seems i want to eat ice cream every day. I am 53. Can you tell me if I may have a vitamin deficiency that`s causing this? If not, do you have any ideas? Thank you.

Answer:  I do not know if there is any particular deficiency that causes one to want to eat ice cream. It is true however that sometimes we crave things because something is missing in our diet. We have tests that can determine your current status of vitamin efficiency. JJP 2/12/08

  • Dr. Garcia, I`ve had botox 3 times (crows feet and bridge of my nose). I`m concerned about doing it again because of the reports coming out that people have died. Should I be worried? Thank you.

Answer:  No need to worry. Botox is safe. Botox is a registered trademark. There have been no problems with Botox to my knowledge. There have been problems with knock-off products that are using a different botulism toxin. Make sure that you have a reputable physician with trained staff handle your needs and you should not have any problems. JJP 2/11/08

  • Dr. Pierce, is any kind of honey good for you?

Answer:  I do not think that it matters the kind of honey. Honey does have some health benefits, but remember it is high in sugar. Extra calories. JJP 2/11/08

  • Dr. Can you tell me if radiesse is good for nose contouring and if it lasts longer than restylane. Thank you.

Answer:  yes it is good and yes it lasts longer. JG 2.11.08

  • Doctors, I have two questions. Do you recommend the Galaxy laser for brown spots and crow`s feet? If not, can you tell me what is the best laser with the least downtime. Also, is there a fish oil product that doesn`t cause you to burp the taste? Thank you for your web site.

Answer:  I think for that I would suggest a Rhytec Portrait if you want to improve them yet limit your downtime. As to the fish oils, some peopel just burp with them, not much you can do I am afraid except take smaller doses more frequently , try the capsules if you are using the oil might help a little but not much. JG 2.6.08

  • Hi Dr Pierce, I need to know how long does dermalive the lip filler last once a procedure has taken place. Also does it last as long as aquamid or is it semi permanent meani ng it goes away after a couple of years. How long does aquamid last even though they say it is permanent is it actually for a few years or forever.

Answer:  I am sorry but it is not availble in the US yet, and most of what I have heard is bad, I would not suggest using it, the granulomas can last years. I do not recommend aquamid either. JG 2.5.08

  • Dr. Pierce, When should I try the black cohosh? I don`t get the hot flashes until I`m 2-3 days in on my period- can I use it during my period? thanks.

Answer:  It is generally used every day. JJP 2/4/08

  • If your progesterone is already high can it cause hot flashes to be worse during menustration? Is there any supplements that could help? Short of going back on the pill- I`m 36?

Answer:  It is possible. Try Black Cohash. JJP 2/4/08

  • Why does progesterone cream sometimes cause dizziness?

Answer:  I`m sure it can, but I have not heard of that. JJP 2/4/08

  • Doc, I have red slightly raised patchiness w/clusters of whiteheads around my mouth and chin. Retinol products exacerbate the condition, topical steriods help tons, but the condition keeps returning and i don`t want to continue using topical steriods.A chemical peel helped, but the condition is back a week later. Your advice?

Answer:  Hard for me to say wthout seeing you, might have some benefit from some IPL treatments to settle it all down, best of luck. JG 2.2.08

  • What is your opinion on black cohosh? And how is it used? When should a woman use it in her cycle? thanks.

Answer:  I think it is fine. There is not enough data to state that it is truly effective and safe for long term use. It is recommended to help alleviate menopausal symptoms. I do not think it matters when it is taken. JJP 2/2/08

  • Dr. Garcia, I get hot flashes on the 2nd and 3rd day of my period...no other time and I have them horribly that day. I`m 36 and everything else about my cycle is normal. I used progesterone cream on that day and it helped. Any idea of what could be causing this? and is using progesterone cream during my period okay? I may only use it when I notice the hot flashes but it would be nice to prevent it all together. Any advice? I`ve never read anything that says you should use it while on your cycle. thanks.

Answer:  Your Hot flashes may be due to a drop in estrogen during that time. Your progesterone levels are already high at the time of menstruation as that is what causes the sloughing of the uterus lining. 1 or 2 days probably will not hurt. A small amount of estrogen may also be helpful instead of the progesterone. JJP 2/2/08

  • What is 5-htp good for? And what can it cause in excess? thanks.

Answer:  5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is marketed in the United States and other countries as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid. As it raises seratonin levels it can be associated with cardiac valve failure and acute, chronic pulmonary hypertension or seratonin syndrome. JJP 2/2/08

  • If wound skin/tissue is infected will it spread to a wider area if the infected skin/tissue is not removed? Thank You.

Answer:  Not if you arte on the proper antibiotics. JJP 2/2/08

  • After the wound healed there is a raised rim only going around the wound,is this normal and is it still healing and will it go down and how long it will take or is that a permant scar? Thank You.

Answer:  normal part of healing, yes. Might take months to go flat though. JG 2.1.08

  • Is it possible to slim and tone the upper arms w/exercise - what exercises work best? thanks.

Answer:  Yes. Any exercises that involve the biceps and triceps will do the trick. Keep the repetitions around 10-12. This should help to tone the muscles. Sliming is (unfortunately) diet based. JJP 1/31/08

  • Dr., first of all, thank you so much for this site. My husband is 55 years old. It seems that his penis is not as big as it used to be. Is this normal? Thank you.

Answer:  I doubt that the penis itself has lost size, instead I think that his erections are not as full as they used to be. This is usually due to low testosterone levels. He may benefit from having his levels checked and being treated by a knowledgalbe physician in the field. JJP 1/30/08

  • I get a pea size lump inside the labia minora. I have a bath and squeeze it; puss and blood comes out..disapears for a couple of months and may come back in the same spot or on the other side? What do you think it is?

Answer:  It sounds like a Bartholin cyst. JJP 1/30/08

  • Dr. Pierce, It is me again about the overbite/smile lines. I need to correct something - the lines don`t exactly go from the corners of my nose to the corners of my mouth - they are about a 1/4 - 1/2 inch to the sides of the corners of my mouth. I dont`have marionette lines - just some fine lines creeping up on my chin. Thanks!

Answer:  small little crepey lines will likely not change, just the deeper folds. JG 1.30.08

  • Hello Dr. Pierce, I am 42 years old, fair skinned, and have used retina since my 20s for acne. I have a moderate overbite, large and gummy smile and fairly deep smile lines (from corners of nose to corners of lips). Would the overbite cause these smile lines to worsen or appear to worsen? (they are deeper than most people in my age group. I am also noticing other fine lines on forehead and marionette lines but nothing like the smile lines) I am thinking of surgery to correct the overbite and wondering if it will have a positive impact on the lines. Thank you!!!

Answer:  bone shape can affect the lines, yes. There will be some effect on the lines but what will happen will depend greatly on the amount of the movement performed. JG 1.30.08

  • Okay, one more question, if I stop using RF fotofacial, due to sagging, what is the best treatment to get to remedy sagging and fat loss? I have had about ten total treatments. I am 54. I am interested, so far, in laser and/or cheek implants or filler. Please recommend what you think would be best for sagging and fat loss from this. It is not terrible, but noticable...Unbelievable the things we do to look good, only to find out later that it backfires on us.

Answer:  well it will either be a filler such as Sculptra if the problem is loss of cheek fullness or possibly a facelift if the tissues have sagged and there is skin excess. Cheek implants can be done but will likely make you look different. JG 1.22.08

  • Dr. Garcia, Do you view IPL facial treatments to be more expensive than they are worth? I would just like to know before I invest the money or I may just call my doctor for a refill of the Retin-A. thanks and have a great weekend~

Answer:  well, I think the effects are good, short lived, but generally safe and worth it for pigmentation problems such as brown or red spots, as to skin tightening or wrinkles, I think the Retin-A is at least as good if not better and lots cheaper. JG 1.21.08

  • Is Fraxel laser better or IPL? It`s so confusing w/so many options to know what is better. thanks so much!

Answer:  likley somewhat better than IPL, but more money and more downtime in healing. JG 1.18.08

  • What do you think of Fraxel Laser Treatment and do you know any kind of price range for the face?

Answer:  I am sorry but I am not a fan of Fraxel. JG 1.18.08

  • In your opinion...Which is better for overall skin renewel for fine lines and skin tone- IPL facial laser treatments or Retin-A? thanks.

    Answer:  Retin-A. JG 1.18.08

  • What is your opinion on Portrait Plasma Treatment? Thanks!

Answer:  I think it is a wonderful system. There are different modes of treatment from very light with minimal down time, to more intense with longer down times. Based on your need you and your physician can design the best option for you. Results can be dramatic. We have had great success with it here. JJP 1/17/08

  • Does Ambien as effective for a deep sleep as a natural sleep cycle? I mean do you still get the same benefits? thanks!

Answer:  NO! Ambien, and other drugs ment to help sleep, prevent you from entering stage 3 sleep which is deep sleep. You will not be as rested as you would if you achieved deep sleep. Try Melatonin. JJP 1/17/08

  • Thanks for your reply Dr. Peirce. I was worried about her putting something harmful in her body. So, is the Mesotherapy effective on small areas? And is it permanent - as far as you know or is it permanent only if you maintain a good diet- so, I guess what I`m asking - is it permanent in the areas treated like lipo? Or is the jury still out? thanks!

Answer:  Nothing is permanent, not even lipo. If you eat a poor diet and do not exercise the area will regain the preoperative size. There will be less fat cells but they will grow in size to accomodate. JJP 1/17/08

  • Please answer asap- My sister is thinking of going and getting a Lipozene?- injection. Does this really work? Is it safe? She doesn`t seem to know much about it. She said it would help her loose weight and says someone who works w/her has had results. What exactly is this product? I am not too fond of the thought of injectables for weight loss. I`d rather do actual lipo for spot reduction. I`m just afraid she`s messing w/something that could be harmful. Any advice? thanks.

Answer:  Lipozene is a fiber (glucomannan)that when taken orally has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol and body fat. I`m not aware of an injectable form. There are Lipolytic injections (Mesotherapy) that work for small areas only. There is no sound research on these and the jury is still out on the true effectivness. JJP 1/16/08

  • Regarding a question that was asked below...So,by midline of the upper abdomen do you mean the area just above the belly button- for lipo w/a tummy tuck? And is it possible to do this w/a mini tummy tuck also? thanks again!

Answer:  yes, just the areea over the so-called six-pack can be suctioned at the time of a tummy tuck. It can be done with a mini or a regular tummy tuck. JG 1.16.08

  • Dr., can you please tell me if retin a works for brown spots? Thank you.

  • What is your opinion of ASAL Lipodissolve?

Answer:  waste of time. JG 1.14.08

  • Dr. Garcia, can you tell me if there is anything more permanent than restylane for nose contouring? If there is, does it work the same way or is it harder to do? Thank you.

Answer:  there is Radiesse and Artefil, they are similar to inject and should last longer. JG 1.14.08

  • Hi doc, i just posted previous questions sorry I have one more, what are your feelings on bioidentical hormone repl.I have heard some negatve things recently reguarding safety of use

Answer:  Desipt what you may have heard, there are no documented reports of any harmful effects of BHRT. Wyth (a big pharm buisness) is the maker of Premarin. They along with the other big parm companies have lots of money to give lobbyists. They have been working hard on stopping the BHRT and hGH movement because it is being done primarily at the compounding pharmacy level. Thus, NO MONEY for them. They don`t care about you, or any other patient. All they want is their money. Their lobbiests are doing a good job and they may get their wish. Then we all suffer. This is just my opinion. JJP 1/14/08

  • hi doctor Pierce,I have two questions re.hgh.Is it legal for medical doctors in NYS or anywhere to prescribe hgh if there is no medical problem just normal decline in levels due to aging. It sounds like it could help many symtoms I`m experiencing Im a 49 yr old female. Its soooo expensive iwould have to take on 2nd job just to pay if I could have it prescribed.are you aware of any vitamin supplements that may help increase levels thank you so much for your time help it is much appreciated you guys are great.

Answer:  Some of the secretagouges use L-Arginine to help the upregulation of hGH. You may try 3 grams a day. Some people gert an upset stomach with this amount. Without lab testing you will not know if this is effective for you. JJP 1/14/08

  • Do doctors ever remove fat cells from small areas like behind the underarm (sits on top of the bra-line) with a needle only- so that no incision is needed?

Answer:  not very effective to to it that way. JG 1.12.08

  • So,by midline of the upper abdomen do you mean the area just above the belly button- for lipo w/a tummy tuck? And is it possible to do this w/a mini tummy tuck also? thanks again!

Answer:  correct, that is what I referred to. It might be possible with the mini tummy tuck but without seeing you in person I cannot say 100%. JG 7.27.08

  • Where are incisions made to lipo the flanks (on a woman) and outer thighs?

Answer:  for the flanks, just to the side of the spine and for the outer thighs it is under the buttocks crease. JG 1.10.08

  • Is it possible to do a mini tummy tuck and lipo the upper and lower abdomen at the same time?

Answer:  yes, can be done. JG 1.10.08

  • Can a full tummy tuck be done at the same time as lipo or will it possibly damage the skin?

Answer:  you can do conservative liposuction conservatively in the midline but not below the ribs as that is where the blood vessels come out from. JG 1.10.08

  • What is your opinion on Genisis laser for facial rejuvenation? thanks!

Answer:  not a fan. JG 1.10.08

  • Have you heard of Velashape and does it really work? Does it work like liposuction? thanks.

Answer:  it migth smooth small areas but it is nowhere near liposuction and if it does work, no one knows how long the results will last. JG 1.10.08

  • If you have lipo on your tummy and thighs does fat ever come back to those areas?

Answer:  Those fat cells that were removed generally do not return. However, the remaining cells will enlarge and give the same apperance as before the procedure if one continues to do the same things that made the areas unsightly to begin with. JJP 1/8/08

  • Can lipo be done on the upper and lower abdomen w/o a tummy tuck?

  • I had a nose job and it had to be redone twice. I have a small hole between my nostrils and it sometimes makes a whistling noise when I try to go to sleep. Will this hole get worse? The doctor said he could not do anything about it. Thank you.

Answer:  should not get worse but it can be repaired, it is not easy though, it is from a septal perforation, there are a number of ways to fix that problem. JG 1.6.08

  • What kind of incisions (if any) are required w/a syring behind the underarms? thanks again.

  • I have used your DMAE eye cream for over 1 year. Do I continue to use this everyday or should I stop for a while and then start again to get maximum results? Thank you.

Answer:  it can be used without a break unlike Retin-A which I suggest a 2-3 month break every year. JG 12.31.07

  • Dear Dr...I have the same exact issue that this person wrote stating... Dr. I have a question that may sound strange. I have noticed within the last 2 months that I have 2 visible veins on the left side of my forhead. They are above my left temple. I have never seen these before. ...My question is...is there any procedure that would make them less visible?..I asked my dermatologist and he did mention a procedure but cautioned me that it may leave a scar...I would appreciate your thoughts on this..Thanks

Answer:  well fillers can be injected around the vein to make it look less prominent, or it can be ligated or tied off through a small incision that will leave a tiny scar. JG 12.28.07

  • Dr. Garcia, first of all Merry Christmas! I have a small raised mole in the hollow of my eye. You said a laser would make it smooth. Will the YAG do this? If not, can you tell me what laser would be best. Thank you.

Answer:  I think the YAG is not an efficient way to remove a raised mole. I would use a CO2 laser myself, or have it hyfercated. JG 12.26.07

  • Dr. Garcia, thank you so much for the info. on the lifestyle lift. I`m looking for the least thing I can do. I am 53 and look good, but my jaw line is starting to sag some. What do you do that wouldn`t make me have too much down time and look pulled? Thank you.

Answer:  I think a well performend cheek lift, if your neck is not too loose is the way to go, just seek out a board certified plastic surgeon and maybe get two consultations to make sure you feel comfortable with the one you choose, best of luck. JG 12.22.07

  • Can you tell me if the lifestyle lift is worth the cost and how long does it last? Thank you.

Answer:  I will comment on the Lifestyle Lift but will do so carefully as I have received threatening letters from the company for some comments I have posted here previously, so lets’ look at what everyone can see and read. Let’s look at what the site says. This relates to what was on the site on 1/25/07, so they may have changed it. They claim 60,000 clients, that sounds great, but is like saying there were over 300,000 liposuction clients in the US alone last year. You want the surgeon to have the experience, not the procedure itself. Procedures do not have experience themselves, it is the people performing the procedure that glean experience. It is a procedure done maybe that many times in its existence but not by a single surgeon. I see no documentation that a single surgeon has done that many it appears, and the results of any surgical procedure will vary from surgeon to surgeon. The pictures shown reveal the before pictures with the patient in many pictures pulling their chins back which makes their skin more loose and then in the after pictures they are showing pushing their chins forward which makes the skin look tighter. Also when a patient is smiling, like in the after pictures, that lifts the tissue and skin higher and when you do not smile, like in the before pictures, the skin and tissue look looser. This lends itself to making the results look more dramatic than they are in real life. The pictures also do not say how long after the procedure they were taken so we have no idea as to how long the results last for. Local anesthetic, OK, can be true, but what happens when you feel pain and they have already used the maximum safe amount of local anesthetic. The statement that some people do not look like yourself for months or years has nothing to do with the anesthetic but with how tight your surgeon pulls the skin, not on the individual procedure done, it’s more on how the surgeon performs the procedure. All medical offices also have to abide by OSHA so that is nothing unique to them. There are national organizations that certify and accredit office operating rooms but OSHA is not one of them. The non-use of sedation or general anesthesia also allows other issues, for example in some states if you have a complication from a surgical procedure performed under sedation or general anesthesia you have to report it to the state medical board, but if the complication happens when done under local anesthesia it does not to be reported. Also, at times doctors perform procedures in their offices under local because in some cases they are not granted privileges to perform the same procedure in the hospital or surgicenter due to their lack of training or background. Sure, doing it in the office is less expensive for the patient, and it is also less expensive for the surgeon too. Awake and relaxed, maybe for some but what about the people who are nervous and fidget or move when the feel something that hurts, all while the surgeon is cutting tissues. Immediate results, well any plastic surgery procedure has immediate results but you are not presentable immediately in terms of what you look like because of swelling and bruising. There is no documented advantage to local anesthesia over general anesthesia in terms of how fast you look presentable. Certainly the less surgery you do in terms of lifting and supporting tissues leads to less swelling and bruising, but it also leads to less effect and less long lasting improvements. Overall, I think you will need to make you own decision but I cannot endorse or recommend the procedure as being anything different than what has been out there for a long time, just not referred to by a catchy marketing term. Caveat Emptor. JG 12.21.07

  • There has been so much talk in the news about birth control pills altering a womens testosterone levels and sex drive permenently....Is this not true or is it?

    Answer:  Most likely. JJP 12/17/07

  • So, the estrogen dominance symptoms will return inevitably and progesterone cream is an on-going treatment? thanks.

Answer:  No. When you go through menopause the estrogen dominance symptoms will stop as you will not be producing sufficient amounts of estrogen. Until then the Progesterone will help the symptoms. JJP 12/13/07

  • Also, is there anything I can do - massage or supplements to help speed this along with my nerves/jaw? thanks.

Answer:  There is nothing in the medical literature to support this. You can, however, try Phosphatidyl Serine and Phosphatidyl Choline as they have been shown to aid in nerve growth. JJP 12/12/07

  • I had jaw surgery one year ago to correct a 10mm overbite that went very well and my big nerves had good placement. I can feel everything but still notice that on one side even though I can feel - feeling it feels tingly when I touch it or when I chew. My surgeon said this could take 2 years to go away- is this true? thanks. Sherry

Answer:  Yes it is true. JJP 12/12/07

  • If I am using progesterone cream to alleviate cramps and breast soreness, after a few months should I be able to stop the cream - I guess what I`m asking is - Could using the cream help my body restore it`s own balance so I don`t have to continue the cream?

Answer:  Yes the levels will come up. You can stop using it but the symptoms that caused you to use it initially will return. JJP 12/12/07

  • I was thinking of doing blood spot testing from ZRT labs. Is this a good test when checking hormone levels? thanks.

Answer:  We do not use it, therefore I can not comment on the efficacy. I think serum is the standard. JJP 12/10/07

  • When doing a blood serum test for hormone panel will the progesterone cream show up in the blood?

Answer:  Yes progesterone levels will show up in serum testing. JJP 12/10/07

  • On the saliva test, I hadn`t used the cream in 3 months when I did the test. And it still said 959. Even so, can I assume that it`s okay for me to continue using the cream because it alleviates my cramps and breast soreness or am I possibly adding to the problem? And why would the saliva test read high when I still had symptoms? thanks so much!

Answer:  I do not know why the test read high. I have addressed possibilities in past posts. I think you should be fine to continue with the cream. JJP 12/10/07

  • Have you heard of Revitalash by Dr. Brinkenhoff?

Answer:  very similar to the product sold by Jan Marini, rumor has it that they are being sued by Allergan as it appears they might be using some pharmaceutical that Allergan makes without their permission. It seems to have a good testimonial page. JG 12.8.07

  • My saliva test showed my progesterone to be 959 and I stopped using my cream 3 months prior to the test. And now that I`m not using the cream 2 weeks out of the month I am having bad cramps. I used it this month and my cramps were alot less. Could it be possible that even though my saliva test was high my blood level could be low contributing to the bad cramps and sore breasts? I also feel more calm when using the cream. thanks.

Answer:  Yes, it is possible. Saliva shows what levels are fre at that time. If you had just used the cream, or still had some on then your level would come back high. JJP 12/8/07

  • What is the ballpark range for a tummy tuck w/ a little lipo in the tummy area?

  • Dr. I have a question that may sound strange. I am 52 and have suffered from periodic migraines for a few years. I have noticed within the last 2 months that I have 2 visible veins on the left side of my forhead. My migraines are always on this side of my head. They are above my left temple. I have never seen these before. Do you think I need to be concerned? Thank you.

Answer:  There are many theories as to the causes of migraines. One is vasospasm. This will not cause veins to stand out, just the opposite. I do not think that there is a relation to these veins and your migraines. JJP 12/03/07

  • Dr. Garcia, thank you for your answer on the mole. I should have told you that it is a raised skin colored mole, not a dark mole. Does that make any difference? Can it be lazered off?

  • Dr. G., I have a small mole on the hollow under my eye. Can this be removed without a scar? Thank you.

  • Hi, to the woman that`s 32 and having issues...I had some of the same symptoms at 36 and I`m not in menopause- I had saliva testing done and I do have high estrogen. Progesterone cream has really helped me. I only use an 1/4 of a tsp once a day- morning cause it sometimes acts as a direutic at night for me. It lessens my cramps and hot flashes. I use it starting on day 12 of my cycle until I have my period. You should always use cream that says USP on it and says how much progesterone is in the product. Doctor, hope you don`t mind me trying to help. It`s just so frustrating when you feel bad. Hope this helps.

Answer:  Not at all. Thanks for the sound input. JJP 11/27/07

  • Dr. Garcia, I want to start using Retina A around my eyes. Will this help thicken the skin? Also, how often should I apply and is it OK to use moisturizer after applying? Thank you.

Answer:  start with every other night, then increase it to every night when tolerating it and then increase to twice per day, using sunblock during the day. I would suggest waiting at least ten minutes after application before applying something over it to allow it to absorb. JG 11.27.07

  • Does a tummy tuck cause your body to deposit fat elsewhere in your body afterwards like lipo- i.e. instead of your tummy where you had the fat removed.

Answer:  no, but if you have fat removed and continue to overeat it will find a different place to collect, so just watch what you eat. JG 11.27.07

  • I have a tummy buldge after having 3 children. I am 5ft. 3inches and weigh 140. How do I know if I would need a tummy tuck or lipo? And what is the cost comparison if it`s just the abdomen? Does a tummy tuck remove excess fat also?

Answer:  no way to tell without seeing you in person. JG 7.27.08

  • Is oral Glucosamine good to take for the skin? thanks. Happy Thanksgiving!!

  • I had my hormone levels checked via saliva and my progesterone was 949 which was very high. But 3 months ago I used 1/4 of tsp once a day for 2 months starting on day 12 of my cycle and I had less cramps and irritability. I was told that my levels were high and I didn`t need to supplement but now that I`m not using it I am getting horrible cramps that 3 advil won`t cure. When I used the cream I had next to none. My estrogens were estrone- 63, Estradiol- 22 and Estriol 45 - which were on the high end. I am 36. Could it possibly be that when using the cream that it got so high because of it getting stored in my fat cells instead of being used in my body and now that`s why I am still symptomatic? And if so, should I just use the cream on the areas where it`s not likely to get absorbed by fat cells like the wrists or back of the knees? thanks.

Answer:  I believe that is the case. The progesterone level is high, but not exteme. Try reducing the cream to 1/8 tsp. JJP 11/19/07

  • Have you heard of Macafem herbal supplement and what do you think about it? thanks.

Devices such a Tua Viso (muscular stimulator) promise to tone and lift the skin. Also what about Clarisonic Ultra-sonic massage complexion brush? Does the massage help the skin tone?

Answer:  no, I do not believe it does anything to help. It might assist in creams being absorbed though. Massage will not help skin tone either. JG 11.13.07

  • I got one shot of celestone at the doctor because I was sick can this one shot cause me to break out a little and flush? thanks.

Answer:  Celestone is a steroid. It was probably given to you to decrease inflamation of the mucose in the upper respiratory system. All adrenocortical steroids can cause impaired wound healing; thin, fragile skin; petechiae and ecchymoses; facial erythema (flushing); increased sweating in the skin. JJP 11/6/07

  • Hello, My name is Rachel. I have been diagnosised with Crohn`s disease, Interstitial cystitis, and recently Raynolds disease (my fingers and toes are turning white and hurt and it is rapidly getting worse.) I`m not sure exactly what my question is I`m just trying to figure out what might REALLY be causeing these problems. My health is ruining my life. I`m only 27 and i`m now on disability. No traditional doctors have been any help to me. All they do is prescribe me more drugs and I don`t really want to put any more poision into my body. I`m very frusterated because my health is rapidly deterierating. I have consistant pain in my lower left abdomen and can even feel a hardness there, but for some reason these doctors never can figure out whats going on with me. I really question my doctors ability at this point because when I said something like well the environement can cause problems, you know things like mercury. he acted like i was crazy and said no, no, i doubt it. I`m so frusterated. I would lke to go to a holistic doctor, but my insurance does not cover it. Now, because they keep acting like I am fine even though I know i`m clearly not... my disability is going to be canceled and i have no idea how i`m going to survive or deal with my health issues without the health insurance i`m currently getting. I have heard that parasites, vaccines, flouride, mercury fillings ect... can all cause illnesses... do you know how i can find a traditional doctor who even knows of these things that can help me?

Answer:  There are physicians that deal with the issues you are describing. You may want to research a physician that does chelation therapy in your area. We do not do these procedures and unfortunately I do not have any recommendations. JJP 11/3/07

  • I heard from `n friend that she is currenly on a low calory diet and that she has to inject herself with Lipolytic Injection (NNP) every morning 25 units (What does this product do and is it healthy?) She also have to take 3 tablets throughout the day GlucAssist (consist of Chrominum Picolinate 100mcg,L-Glutamine233mg,Pyridoxine Hydrochloride20mg, Magnesium Asparate116mg and Potassium Aparate116mg)Is this tablets ok? She is really loosing weight nicely and I am considering it. What do you think?

Answer:  The low calorie diet is the key to her weight loss. I`m not exactly sure as to the exact nature of her shots. We use a vitamin B shot and inositol shot with a few other ingredients to help patients have energy to exercise while on a low calorie diet. I believe that is what these shots are for. The pills will also supplement the low calorie diet. JJP 11/3/07

  • I am 33 years old and in the past two years (after my sons birth) I have noticed black circles below my eyes and it is getting worse. What can I do about it?
